A Historic Masterpiece
This neo-Renaissance landmark was originally conceived by the celebrated architect Theophil Edvard von Hansen for Vienna’s 1873 World’s Fair. For decades, the building served as a public institution before undergoing a meticulous restoration in 2013 that transformed it into a palatial urban resort.
In 2024, following a visionary renovation by DesignAgency of Barcelona, the hotel marked a new chapter as the first Anantara property in the German-speaking world. Its significance was further cemented in October 2025, when it proudly joined The Leading Hotels of the World, becoming the first Vienna property in more than two decades to receive this distinction.
The Palais Hansen occupies a coveted location within UNESCO’s World Heritage Site along the 5.3-kilometer Ringstrasse, surrounded by architectural gems — many also designed by Hansen himself — such as the Austrian Parliament, the Vienna Stock Exchange, and the Palais Ephrussi. Guests can stroll to St. Stephen’s Cathedral or explore the charming Servitenviertel, Vienna’s so-called “Little Paris,” brimming with local boutiques, wine bars, and beloved cafés.
Inspired by Hellenistic architecture, the complex encompasses eight interconnected structures adorned with Ionic columns, graceful arches, and four dramatic domes. The original open-air carriage courtyard has been enclosed in glass, now housing Theo’s Lounge & Bar, while two additional courtyards host the Theophil Ballroom and Brasserie Sophie.
Inside, the interiors celebrate Vienna’s imperial heritage with a modern twist, blending natural stone, rich woods, and soft textiles to create a sense of timeless sophistication. The hotel’s two grand staircases, with their original wedge-shaped treads and ornate railings, remain a testament to Hansen’s artistic vision.

The pinnacle of luxury is the Anantara Suite, a radiant residence with French balconies overlooking Ringstrasse. Inside, a sunlit living room welcomes guests with a curated selection of Austrian Sekt, fresh fruit, and chocolate treats.
The suite encompasses a spacious dining area, an elegant bedroom, and indulgent details such as a guest powder room, a wine cooler, separate tub and rain shower, flexible check-in and check-out, and the option for connecting rooms. All suites include personalized transfer services and immersive in-room experiences designed for modern travelers.
Culinary Excellence
Under the leadership of Chef Dieter Stamminger, the hotel’s dining experiences celebrate both local traditions and global refinement.
Brasserie Sophie, named in honor of the architect’s wife, offers a lavish breakfast with free-range eggs, artisanal breads, local charcuterie, and seasonal specialties.
Besides a buffet selection, guests can order from a wide range of À la carte options, such as Traditional Viennese “Eierspeis”, Egg Benedict, Breakfast Taco, Viennese Dim Sum or even a SPECIALTY — “Wiener Benedict” with Boiled Beef, Potato Rösti, Apple Horseradish, Spinach Hollandaise.
Non-Alcoholic and Alcoholic drinks complement breakfast offering.

Theo’s Lounge & Bar, in the former courtyard, is a lush oasis under glass, flanked by swaying palms that evoke Vienna’s storied Palm Houses. By day, it delights with pastries by Pierre Zani, Viennese coffee, and light bites. By afternoon, it hosts Vienna’s first Michelin-starred afternoon tea, curated with Chef Stamminger and Paul Gamauf of EDVARD, where delicacies such as oyster tartare, pumpkin goulash, and blueberry caviar accompany premium teas and champagne. As evening falls, Theo’s becomes a lively cocktail bar with inventive mixology and live soul music from Thursday through Saturday.
The crown jewel, EDVARD, boasts one Michelin Star, four toques, and 17 Gault & Millau points. Chef Paul Gamauf, among Austria’s top 50 culinary visionaries, champions seasonal, sustainable gastronomy.
His tasting menus — five, seven, or nine courses — are culinary journeys that reflect the rhythm of nature and the purity of locally sourced ingredients. Techniques such as fermentation, pickling, and canning honor each season, ensuring minimal waste while delivering maximum flavor.
