The first of its six canal houses dates back to 1665, with the remaining mansions added over the following decades. Over the centuries, these buildings were home to prominent citizens of Amsterdam, leaving an indelible mark that the hotel carefully preserves. The iconic wooden staircase, designed by Louis XIV’s architect Daniel Marot, stands as a testament to this rich heritage.
Among the hotel’s historic treasures is the Maurer Room, an intimate 12-seat dining space adorned with original 18th-century Rococo furnishings and Italian landscape paintings collected by its past owners.
Hidden within the wood-paneled walls, a secret cabinet reveals an elegant collection of Cire Trudon fragrances, a nod to Louis XIV’s favorites. Meanwhile, the former bank vault has been transformed into the atmospheric Vault Bar, where guests can sip premium spirits and inventive cocktails surrounded by the building’s storied past.
A rare inner garden provides a tranquil escape amid the city’s bustle. This lush, manicured retreat — one of Amsterdam’s 27 protected UNESCO World Heritage sites — is perfect for afternoon tea, private events, or a quiet moment of reflection. London’s GA Design undertook the original development from the bank to the hotel in 2014 and lately, Goddard Littlefair masterminded the hotel’s interiors, blending heritage details with contemporary sophistication.

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam features 93 rooms, including suites and lofts, all exuding understated luxury in soothing cream and blue tones. Panoramic windows frame enchanting views of the canal, the city’s gabled rooftops, or the serene private garden.
Our suite overlooking the Herengracht offered a welcoming first impression: champagne, fresh flowers, fruits, and a selection of artisanal sweets. Within, a spacious living room with a study, a walk-in closet, and a bedroom outfitted with the signature Waldorf Astoria king bed and Egyptian cotton linens created the ultimate haven.
Modern amenities — Wi-Fi, a minibar, tea and coffee service, blackout curtains, and plush furnishings — ensured comfort, while the elegant bathroom featured a walk-in shower, soft robes, slippers, and bath products from the famous Australian brand Grown Alchemist.
Dining and Signature Experiences
The hotel’s culinary offerings are as refined as its setting. The Peacock Bar and Lounge, with its flowing curtains and handcrafted glass accents, serves all-day dining and an iconic afternoon tea accompanied by TWG teas and Pol Roger champagne.
Goldfinch Brasserie invites guests to savor its Taste of Waldorf breakfast, a gourmet spread of fresh fruit, house-smoked salmon, artisanal pastries, and fine Dutch cheeses, paired with freshly pressed juices, selection of coffees and teas.
Guests can also opt for a course from the à la carte menu, such as Avocado Toast, Eggs Royal with Smoked Salmon or Poffertjes — traditional Dutch mini-pancakes served with cubes of butter, powdered sugar and seasonal berries.
The brasserie also offers sophisticated lunch and dinner menus that present local and international dishes with a contemporary twist.
Evenings at the Vault Bar are a highlight, where the history of the former bank intertwines with modern mixology. Its award-winning cocktail menu, crafted under the guidance of Ignazio Di Gangi, pays homage to a legendary 1960s “alchemist” bartender, rumored to have left behind secret recipes hidden in the vault.
Standouts include the Emerald Sphere (€23), a delicate balance of KiNoBi Gin, Umeshiso & Hojicha Liqueurs, and umami bitters, and the Spiced Pearl (€24), a bold mix of tequila, mezcal, and habanero-infused Aperol. We paired these with Pata Negra and crushed tomato on sourdough (€30), a small yet flavorful bite.

The hotel’s award-winning Guerlain Spa offers a serene oasis for relaxation and rejuvenation. Guests can enjoy body and facial treatments, a fitness center, an indoor pool, steam room, sauna, and direct access to the tranquil courtyard garden.
