Between the old wooden houses and the modern buildings of Stavanger lies the exclusive, modern and stylish boutique hotel EILERT SMITH, offering excellent comfort, high quality amenities and exceptional service to make every guest’s stay unforgettable and unique.
EILERT SMITH Hotel is named after the great Stavanger architect Eilert Smith, who designed the building in 1937 in a functional, modernist style.
The former warehouse of Rogaland Felleskjøp (An agricultural retailer for equipment and animal supplies), which occupied the building of the current hotel, received a new life after a complete renovation, which was the responsibility of Pål Trodahl from Trodahl Arkitekter.
HERITAGE & DESIGN
The hotel’s owners, Stensrud family, wished to preserve the historical heritage of the building and create a hotel with soul. Trodahl was determined in his choice to keep the original design at the same time as the building went through a significant upgrade and expansion.
Trodahl added two additional floors to the old building while maintaining a modernist expression characterized by its general proportions, curved geometric shapes, clock tower and narrow horizontal windows.
Classic modernistic materials, such as travertine, brass, marble and wood, were used to enhance the building’s architectural language.
Interior design of EILERT SMITH is made in Scandinavian style to provide the best experience and also because of environmental friendliness. The walls in the corridors and the reception area are painted light green, thus creating a sense of peace and tranquility.
The hotel is decorated with works of art from Scandinavia, mostly by Norwegian artists, some fixed installations, others mobile. The renowned Stavanger artist Per Dybvig, who the hotel collaborates with, made 5 unique bronze sculptures especially for the hotel.
EILERT SMITH Hotel is especially good for business trips, work meetings, leisure, visiting Stavanger to experience art and culture, or maybe for those who are planning to celebrate something special. The hotel staff will do their best to offer each guest an individual approach, making the dream a reality.

“The concept is simple — to give our guests the best experience in the world. At Eilert Smith Hotel we have an interest and passion for architecture, history, art, and good food. We also have a dedicated mission to make our guests feel at home, to bring forward the hominess feeling without all the practical tasks, — says General Manager Stina Karlsson. — We want to stand out as a service minded hotel, with a higher standard than normal. Excellence is therefore an attitude, and a way of thinking. We respect all guests and treat them equally. The respect expands from general behaviour and include having respect for the Hotel, the original architect Eilert Smith, the building, architecture, and interior design. EILERT SMITH HOTEL is for everyone, everybody will be welcomed with a big smile, respect, and a good atmosphere — this will be achieved by being attentive to details, and always helpful with any tasks.”
RELAXING STAY
The hotel offers 11 individually designed rooms and suites, as well as the Residence Eilert, with its special character, classic design furniture and beds you can only dream of.
A hotel stay should feel like a relaxing, comfortable and memorable experience.
“The walls inside the rooms are painted white to give the rooms a spacious and fresh elegant look. All kitchen areas, beds and cabinets are made of oak, specially designed by KBH Københavns Møbelsnedkeri (Denmark), — continues Stina.”
Bright and airy Junior Suite with beautiful views of the city and the sea. The room has a king-size bed, a work and leisure area, a dining area, a coffee machine, an electric kettle and premium teas from the Helmer brand.
“Dining tables, lounge tables, chairs and TV shelves are designed and built in oak by a local furniture company from Hellvik-Eikund, who specialize in breathing new life into classic Norwegian furniture design from the 50s and 60s.”
Spacious bathroom provided all necessary accessories and perfumes from the famous German brand Babor.
BREAKFAST IN THE ROOM
Align with the concept of the hotel, breakfast is served only in the room according to the menu chosen by the guest, which also ensures minimal food waste.
Breakfasts are prepared by the RE-NAA restaurant team, invariably focusing on quality, local raw ingredients and suppliers — cold cuts, eggs, fresh vegetables, fruits, bread and pastries from SIRKUS RE-NAA, house-roasted coffee, juices and water.
RE-NAA — GOURMET MEETING POINT
Guests can enjoy an unforgettable dining experience on the ground floor of the hotel, at the renowned two-Michelin-starred RE-NAA restaurant, which is organized around an open kitchen, inviting guests to watch culinary masterpieces in process of their preparation.
Sven-Erik Renaa, owner and brand chef of the restaurant, focuses on natural and local products, which makes each dinner even more unique. Meals are prepared and served by its select chefs, inspired by the surrounding landscape.
EILERT SMITH RESIDENCE
The top two floors are occupied by the Residence Eilert, built around a three-meter-diameter spiral staircase. A circular skylight provides daylight that travels down the stairs directly to the entrance. The panoramic view of Stavanger is breathtaking.
“Eilert’s Residence is unique in its own way. It’s rare in the Norwegian market and is therefore interesting to market internationally, — tells Stina. — Although large in area, it is subdued in its details and interior, in the same materials and palette as the rest of the hotel. It was important to bring out the gem this building was originally. It gives Stavanger something that did not exist before. Natural sustainability and solid craftsmanship are envisaged. And the goal is to give guests the best experience in the world.”
The Residence is also a perfect space to host various private and corporate events, presentations, receptions and parties.
For all occasions, original gourmet treats are prepared by the RE-NAA team.
The hotel is as chemical free as possible and is an ENJO certified customer. There is very little garbage and waste, and it is all sorted, refills are mainly used for the rooms, and they are organic products. There are no disposable products at all, cloth napkins, dishes and cutlery are locally produced.
Stina Karlsson: “Our goal is to make the best of everything for a comfortable stay within the walls of the hotel. Therefore, we have focused on using only high-quality materials, furniture, exquisite and healthy food, in order to give guests a feeling of comfort, relaxation, but also exclusivity and luxury at the same time.”
