Located in historic part of vibrant Lisbon, the boutique Bairro Alto Hotel combines style, elegance, bohemianism and the classic charm of an exciting and picturesque city.
Bairro Alto Hotel, a renowned member of “The Leading Hotels of the World”, is a pioneer in the concept of 5 star boutique hotels in Portugal.
A Touch of History
The Bairro Alto Hotel was opened in 2005 in a building where until 1980 was situated the Grand Hôtel de L’Europe, one of the most iconic hotels in the national hospitality industry in Portugal.
The architectural complex of Bairro Alto Hotel dates back to the 18th century and is located on the border of two of the most emblematic districts of Lisbon — the bohemian Bairro Alto and elegant Chiado, where the great names of Portuguese history lived.
Eduardo Souto de Moura, architect awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2011, together with the interior studios Atelier Bastir and TheStudio, carried out a massive expansion and renovation of the hotel, reviving a new hotel twice the size of the previous one, but retaining the boutique concept with its original charm and personality.
In August 2019, the Bairro Alto Hotel reopened its doors to visitors, preserving its charm and splendor, with more luxury amenities to offer.
Since its opening and over the years, Bairro Alto Hotel has been paying great attention to art, acquiring works of famous Portuguese artists José Pedro Vieira, Diogo Rosa Lã, Julião Sarmento, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Pedro Calapez, João Louro, which emphasize the soul and style of the hotel.
The hotel lobby features famous sculptures by Rui Chafes and the photographs by Rui Calçada Bastos.
The entire interior of the Bairro Alto Hotel boldly combines antiques and vintage objects, wood and weaving, tiles and marble, classic paintings and modern lighting, bright colors and pronounced patterns, Portuguese brands and famous names in international design.
Rooms and Luxes
The hotel has 87 rooms, of which 65 are doubles and 22 suites (12 junior suites and 10 suites). A highlight are the six new suites, which are more spacious and connect with one or two more guest rooms for guests looking for more space.
Regardless of the size, all room categories are very bright thanks to sunlight through panoramic windows. The decor and interior of the rooms vary depending on the type of the room.
One of the hotel’s most luxurious suites is CHIADO, which allows guests to experience the glamor of the city through a beautiful view of the historic center and the Luís de Camões Square.
The interior of the room contains modernity in decorative elements, which makes it pleasant, comfortable and very sophisticated. The suite has a living room, work area and bedroom, and the possibility of combining it with a single room.
A bathroom with natural light, a shower and an antique bathtub makes the space even more special.
